Congratulations to the SVI Class of 2023!

The 21st summer of the Summer Vocology Institute wrapped up on July 20th with a final classroom session in the Performing Arts Building on the University of Utah campus. 29 students from the continental U.S., one U.S. Territory, and 4 foreign countries graduated from our program this year.

Students spent 6 intensive weeks working with guest faculty from across the country to deepen their understanding of voice production, voice habilitation, and practical applications of voice science for the stage, concert hall, recording studio, in the clinic, and in the community.

Students come from many different backgrounds and varied professional and academic experience. While we primarily design our content to support the work of voice teachers and coaches, voice researchers, speech pathologists and ENTs, we have also had other students join our program who engage with the voice in their professional lives. Many of our students have backgrounds as previous or current actors or singers, which makes for an exceptional graduation ceremony each year where students perform for and with eachother to commemorate the completion of the program.5 Photo collage with a photo of a "Welcome to SVI" sandwich board sign, a person holding an air pressure device, a person doing a laryngeal exam on another person holding a rigid scope, people holding scalpels during a dissection lab, students posing infront of large red U.While SVI boasts a very full academic schedule, where students complete 9 graduate-level credits in just 6 weeks, our students make the most of their free hours exploring the many natural and cultural attractions the state of Utah and the Salt Lake region has to offer. Many visits were made to the Great Salt Lake, Bonneville Salt Flats, Timpanogos Cave National Monument, and the many state and national parks and public trails that are within reach. Hiking a scenic trail, or soaking in a natural hot spring, can be great remedies to hard-worked brains! Exploring our region with new friends is an unforgettable part of their SVI experience.
